LARGE INTESTINE (colon) - slide 135 (monkey)

Once again, determine the boundaries between mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serous (or adventitia).   In which plane is your section cut?   Compare with a neighbor.

The main features for purposes of identification are the absence of villi, the great number of crypts and the great number of goblet cells.   You may see isolated, scattered lymph nodules.   The epithelium lining the lumen and the crypts is still simple columnar but largely made of goblet cells.   Mucosal folds are temporary in the colon.
