Slide DMS142 [Pancreas, human, H&E]. Differentiate stromal from parenchymal elements (secretory acini, ducts, islets) of the pancreas. Lobulation and overall stromal organization is quite similar to salivary glands. Identify the pancreatic islets, but we will postpone detailed study of these until the lab on endocrine glands. Look for interlobular and intralobular ducts. After branching from an interlobular duct and entering the lobule the intralobular duct branches almost immediately into much smaller intercalated ducts which are long and also branched. So, unlike salivary glands, intralobular ducts are small and difficult to discern. If lucky you may be able to follow an intercalated duct into the interior of a secretory acinus as the centro-acinar cells [see the diagram below]. The cytological features of the acinar secretory units are best studied in the following slide.
