SLIDE 77 - SPINAL CORD SMEAR

Anterior horn cells can be seen rather three-dimensional in a smear like this.  Look for an area where the neurons stain fairly deeply with hematoxylin and find good examples of multipolar cells.  Can you see nuclei, nucleoli, Nissl substance?  Between the neurons are many small glial nuclei, some long nerve processes, as well as some capillaries; together, these make up the neuropil.  Remember: there are no collagenic or elastic fibers here.
